NOTE: Examples used in this article are general in nature and do not necessarily relate to a specific engine or system. Illustrations and procedures have been chosen to guide mechanic through engine overhaul process. Descriptions of processes of cleaning, inspection, assembly and machine shop practice are included.

Always refer to appropriate engine overhaul article, if available, in the ENGINES section for complete overhaul procedures and specifications for the vehicle being repaired. For a Buick Enclave engine service, the general information below should be used as supporting guidance only, while final measurements, torque values, clearances, and component limits must come from the exact engine-specific service data.

DESCRIPTION

Examples used in this article are general in nature and do not necessarily relate to a specific engine or system. The purpose of this section is to explain the basic practices used during an engine overhaul, including how components are identified, cleaned, inspected, measured, repaired, and prepared for reassembly.

Illustrations and procedures have been chosen to guide mechanic through engine overhaul process. Descriptions of cleaning, inspection, and assembly processes are included. A successful overhaul depends on more than replacing worn parts. Every surface, bore, journal, sealing area, fastener, and oil or coolant passage must be checked carefully before the engine is assembled again.

During overhaul work, cleanliness is critical. Dirt, abrasive residue, old gasket material, metal particles, or leftover cleaning chemicals can quickly damage newly installed bearings, piston rings, seals, and machined surfaces. Parts should be organized in the order they were removed, and components that wear together should be marked so they can be inspected and evaluated as matched sets.

When applying these general overhaul principles to a Buick Enclave, always compare the inspection results with the correct engine specifications. General procedures can describe the method, but the vehicle-specific data determines whether a part can be reused, machined, or replaced.

ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Engine may be identified from Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stamped on a metal tab. Metal tab may be located in different locations depending on manufacturer. Engine identification number or serial number is located on cylinder block. Location varies with each manufacturer.

Correct engine identification should be completed before ordering parts, measuring components, or selecting repair procedures. Similar engine families may use different cylinder heads, timing components, gaskets, sensors, fasteners, or internal clearances. A small difference in engine code or production application can change the correct overhaul procedure.

Use the VIN, engine code, emissions label, casting numbers, and service information together when confirming the engine. If the engine has been replaced previously, do not rely only on the vehicle identification plate. Inspect the engine block markings and compare visible components with the service information before beginning detailed disassembly.
