Passenger Airbag Status Indicator

The Buick Enclave is equipped with a passenger sensing system. See Passenger Sensing System for important safety information about how the system detects the front passenger seating condition.

The passenger airbag status indicator is located on the instrument panel and shows whether the front outboard passenger frontal airbag is enabled or disabled.

When the vehicle is started, the passenger airbag status indicator will illuminate ON and OFF, or show the on and off symbols, for several seconds as part of a system check. If remote start is used, when equipped, this initial check may not be visible. After a few more seconds, the indicator will show either ON or OFF, or the corresponding symbol, to display the current status of the front outboard passenger frontal airbag.

If the word ON or the on symbol is illuminated, the front outboard passenger frontal airbag is permitted to inflate if required during a crash.

If the word OFF or the off symbol is illuminated, the passenger sensing system has turned off the front outboard passenger frontal airbag.

If both status indicators remain illuminated after several seconds, or if no indicator lights appear at all, there may be a problem with the indicator lights or with the passenger sensing system.

See your dealer for service.

If the airbag readiness light comes on and stays on, something may be wrong with the airbag system. To help avoid injury to yourself or others, have the vehicle serviced right away. See Airbag Readiness Light for more information, including important safety information.

Charging System Light

Charging system warning light that appears briefly during ignition check

The charging system light comes on briefly when the ignition is turned on and the engine is not running. This is a normal bulb check to confirm that the indicator is working.

The light should go out after the engine is started.

If the light stays on, or comes on while driving, there may be a problem with the electrical charging system. Have the system checked by your dealer. Continuing to drive with this light illuminated could drain the battery and may eventually affect vehicle operation.

When this light appears, the Driver Information Center (DIC) also displays the SERVICE BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM message.

See Vehicle Messages for more information.

If the Buick Enclave must be driven a short distance while the light is on, turn off unnecessary accessories, such as the radio, rear defogger, heated seats, and air conditioner, to reduce electrical load.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp

► A computer system called OBD II, or On-Board Diagnostics-Second Generation, monitors vehicle operation to help keep emissions within acceptable limits and support cleaner operation. This light comes on when the vehicle is placed in ON/RUN as a check to show that it is working. If the light does not come on during this check, have the vehicle serviced by your dealer. See Ignition Positions for more information.

Malfunction indicator lamp showing an OBD II emissions system problem

If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on and stays on while the engine is running, an OBD II-related problem has been detected and service is required.

Many malfunctions are detected by the system before the driver notices a change in performance. Paying attention to this light can help prevent more serious damage. The system also helps a service technician diagnose the issue accurately.

Notice: If the vehicle is continually driven with this light on, the emission controls may not work as effectively, fuel economy may be reduced, and the engine may not run as smoothly. This could lead to costly repairs that may not be covered by the vehicle warranty.

Notice: Modifications to the engine, transmission, exhaust, intake, or fuel system, or replacing the original tires with tires that do not match the same Tire Performance Criteria (TPC), can affect emission controls and cause this light to come on. These modifications may lead to costly repairs not covered by the vehicle warranty and may also cause the vehicle to fail a required Emission Inspection/Maintenance test. See Accessories and Modifications.

This light can indicate a malfunction in one of two ways:

Light Flashing: A misfire condition has been detected. A misfire increases emissions and can damage the emission control system. Diagnosis and service may be required.

To help prevent more serious damage to the Buick Enclave:

► Reduce vehicle speed.

► Avoid hard acceleration.

► Avoid steep uphill grades when possible.

► If towing a trailer, reduce the amount of cargo being hauled as soon as it is safe and practical.

If the light continues to flash, stop and park the vehicle in a safe location. Turn the vehicle off, wait at least 10 seconds, and restart the engine. If the light is still flashing, follow the steps above and see your dealer for service as soon as possible.

Light On Steady: An emission control system malfunction has been detected.

Diagnosis and service may be required.

The following actions may correct an emission system malfunction:

► Check that the fuel cap is fully installed. See Filling the Tank. The diagnostic system can detect if the fuel cap has been left off or installed incorrectly. A loose or missing fuel cap allows fuel vapor to escape into the atmosphere.

► A few normal driving trips with the fuel cap properly installed may turn the light off.

► Check that good quality fuel is being used. Poor fuel quality can cause the engine to run less efficiently and may result in stalling after start-up, stalling when shifting into gear, misfiring, hesitation during acceleration, or stumbling on acceleration.

These conditions may disappear once the engine warms up.

If one or more of these conditions occurs, try changing the fuel brand used.

At least one full tank of the proper fuel may be required before the light turns off.

See Recommended Fuel.

If the light does not turn off after these checks, your dealer can inspect the Buick Enclave with the proper diagnostic tools and test equipment to locate and repair any mechanical or electrical problem.

Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Programs

Some local governments operate programs that inspect on-vehicle emission control equipment. During the inspection, test equipment is connected to the vehicle’s Data Link Connector (DLC).

Data Link Connector located under the instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel

The DLC is located under the instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel. See your dealer if assistance is needed.

The vehicle may not pass inspection if:

► The malfunction indicator lamp is on while the engine is running, or the light does not come on when the ignition is turned to ON/RUN with the engine off.

► The OBD II system determines that critical emission control systems have not been fully diagnosed. In this condition, the vehicle may be considered not ready for inspection. This can happen if the 12-volt battery was recently replaced or discharged. The diagnostic system evaluates key emission control systems during normal driving, and this process may take several days of routine operation.

If routine driving has been completed and the vehicle still does not pass inspection because the OBD II system is not ready, your dealer can help prepare the Buick Enclave for inspection.
