Securing Child Restraints (Rear Seat)

When securing a child restraint in a rear seating position, carefully review the instructions supplied with the child restraint to make sure it is compatible with this vehicle and with the selected seating position.

If the child restraint is designed for the LATCH system, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH System) for information about where and how to install the restraint using LATCH. If the child restraint is secured with a vehicle safety belt and also uses a top tether, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH System) for top tether anchor locations.

Do not secure a child seat in a seating position without a top tether anchor if national or local law requires the top tether to be anchored, or if the instructions supplied with the child restraint state that the top strap must be attached.

In Canada, forward-facing child restraints are required by law to have a top tether, and the tether must be attached during installation.

If the child restraint does not use the LATCH system, the vehicle safety belt will be used to secure the child restraint in this rear seating position.

Always follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. These instructions explain the correct belt path, restraint angle, harness use, and any additional installation requirements for that specific model.

Secure the child in the child restraint exactly when and how the child restraint manufacturer instructs.

If more than one child restraint must be installed in the rear seat of the Buick Enclave, read Where to Put the Restraint before choosing seating positions.

1. Place the child restraint on the seat.
2. Pick up the latch plate, then route the lap and shoulder portions of the vehicle safety belt through or around the child restraint. The child restraint instructions will show the correct belt path.

3. Push the latch plate into the buckle until it clicks.

Position the buckle release button so the safety belt can be unbuckled quickly if the restraint must be removed or adjusted.

4. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out of the retractor to set the lock. Once the retractor lock is set, the shoulder belt can be tightened, but it cannot be pulled farther out of the retractor.

5. To tighten the belt, press down firmly on the child restraint, pull the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion, and feed the shoulder belt back into the retractor. When installing a forward-facing child restraint, using your knee to apply downward pressure on the restraint may help remove extra slack from the belt.

Try to pull the belt out of the retractor to confirm that the retractor is locked. If the retractor is not locked, repeat Steps 4 and 5 until the belt holds correctly.

6. If the child restraint has a top tether, follow the child restraint manufacturer’s instructions for using it. See Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH System) for more information.
7. Before placing a child in the child restraint, make sure the restraint is securely held in place. To check the installation in the Buick Enclave, grasp the child restraint at the safety belt path and try to move it side to side and forward and rearward. When the child restraint is installed correctly, it should not move more than 2.5 cm (1 in).

To remove the child restraint, unbuckle the vehicle safety belt and allow it to return fully to its stowed position.

If the top tether is attached to a top tether anchor, disconnect it before removing the restraint from the Buick Enclave rear seat.

Securing Child Restraints (Right Front Passenger Seat)

The Buick Enclave is equipped with airbags, so a rear seat is the safer and preferred location for securing a forward-facing child restraint whenever possible.

See Where to Put the Restraint.

In addition, the vehicle has a passenger sensing system designed to turn off the right front passenger frontal airbag under certain conditions. See Passenger Sensing System and Passenger Airbag Status Indicator for more information, including important safety information about airbag status and child restraint placement.

► A label on the sun visor states, “Never put a rear-facing child seat in the front.” This warning is provided because the risk to a rear-facing child is extremely serious if the passenger airbag deploys.

Warning icon about the danger of placing a rear-facing child restraint near the front passenger airbagWARNING
A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be seriously injured or killed if the right front passenger airbag inflates.

This is because the back of the rear-facing child restraint would be positioned very close to the inflating airbag. A child in a forward-facing child restraint can also be seriously injured or killed if the right front passenger airbag inflates while the passenger seat is too far forward.

Even if the passenger sensing system has turned off the right front passenger frontal airbag, no system is fail-safe. No one can guarantee that an airbag will not deploy under an unusual circumstance, even when it is shown as off.

Secure rear-facing child restraints in a rear seat, even if the airbag is off. If a forward-facing child restraint must be secured in the right front seat of the Buick Enclave, always move the front passenger seat as far rearward as it will go. A rear seat remains the better location for securing a child restraint.

See Passenger Sensing System for additional information.

If the child restraint uses the LATCH system, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH System) for information about where and how to install the restraint using LATCH. If the child restraint is secured with a safety belt and also uses a top tether, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH System) for top tether anchor locations.

Do not secure a child seat in any position without a top tether anchor if national or local law requires the top tether to be anchored, or if the instructions supplied with the child restraint state that the top strap must be attached.

In Canada, forward-facing child restraints are required by law to have a top tether, and the tether must be attached during installation.

The lap-shoulder belt will be used to secure the child restraint in this seating position. Follow the instructions that came with the child restraint carefully, including the required belt path, restraint angle, and harness setup.

1. Move the seat as far back as it will go before securing the forward-facing child restraint.

When the passenger sensing system has turned off the right front passenger frontal airbag, the off indicator on the passenger airbag status indicator should illuminate and remain lit when the vehicle is started.

See Passenger Airbag Status Indicator.

2. Put the child restraint on the seat.
3. Pick up the latch plate, then route the lap and shoulder portions of the vehicle safety belt through or around the child restraint. The child restraint manufacturer’s instructions will show the correct routing path.

5. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out of the retractor to set the lock. Once the retractor lock is set, the belt can be tightened, but it cannot be pulled farther out of the retractor.

6. To tighten the belt, press down firmly on the child restraint, pull the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion, and feed the shoulder belt back into the retractor. When installing a forward-facing child restraint, it may help to use your knee to press down on the restraint while tightening the belt.

Try to pull the belt out of the retractor to confirm that the retractor is locked. If the retractor is not locked, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until the belt holds correctly.

7. Before placing a child in the child restraint, make sure the restraint is securely held in place. To check the installation in the Buick Enclave, grasp the child restraint at the safety belt path and try to move it side to side and forward and rearward. When properly installed, the restraint should not move more than 2.5 cm (1 in).

If the airbags are off, the off indicator in the passenger airbag status indicator will illuminate and remain on when the vehicle is started.

If a child restraint has been installed and the on indicator is lit, see “If the On Indicator Is Lit for a Child Restraint” under Passenger Sensing System for more information.

To remove the child restraint, unbuckle the vehicle safety belt and allow it to return fully to the stowed position.
