Buick Enclave: Maintenance and Lubrication
SPECIFICATIONS
APPROXIMATE FLUID CAPACITIES
The following approximate capacities are provided in both US English and metric conversions. These values are intended as service reference information and should be used together with the correct checking and filling procedures. Fluid level can vary depending on whether a system has been fully drained, partially serviced, or filled after component replacement, so final level verification should always follow the proper service method.
See Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations for more information about approved products, specifications, and service requirements. Using the correct fluid is just as important as adding the correct amount, because each system depends on specific lubrication, cooling, pressure, sealing, and corrosion protection properties.

FLUID AND LUBRICANT RECOMMENDATIONS
Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
The fluid and lubricant recommendations identify the products required to service the vehicle correctly. Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, transfer case fluid where applicable, and other lubricants must meet the proper GM specifications. Substituting an incorrect product may affect performance, component durability, sealing materials, or system operation.
When servicing the Buick Enclave, always confirm the latest specification and use clean containers, proper tools, and the correct filling procedure. Contaminated fluid, mixed products, or fluids that do not meet the required standard can create problems that may not appear immediately but can shorten component life over time.

MAINTENANCE ITEMS
The Normal Maintenance Replacement Parts information is found in the Owner's Manual. Refer to the Maintenance Schedule subsection of the Owner's Manual for the correct maintenance parts and service intervals. This helps ensure that filters, spark plugs, belts, fluids, and other service items are selected according to the vehicle’s intended requirements rather than by appearance or approximate fit.
You may be able to use the Search information function using the words Replacement Parts. This can help locate the correct section faster when looking for maintenance part references, replacement intervals, or related service notes.
MAINTENANCE
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE (NORTH AMERICAN EMISSIONS)
The Maintenance Schedule information is found in the Owner's Manual. The schedule explains which inspections and services should be performed at specific mileage or time intervals, depending on operating conditions. Regular maintenance helps protect the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, suspension, cooling system, and other major systems.
Refer to the Maintenance Schedule subsection of the Owner's Manual, or use the Search information function with the words Scheduled Maintenance. For a Buick Enclave used in heavy traffic, short-trip driving, dusty roads, extreme temperatures, or frequent family travel, maintenance intervals should be followed carefully and adjusted when severe service conditions apply.
GM OIL LIFE SYSTEM RESETTING
When to Change Engine Oil
This vehicle has a computer-based system that indicates when to change the engine oil and oil filter. The calculation is based on vehicle use, including engine revolutions and engine temperature, rather than mileage alone. Because driving conditions can vary greatly, the mileage at which an oil change is indicated can also vary. Stop-and-go driving, repeated short trips, high temperatures, cold starts, extended idling, and towing or heavy-load operation can reduce oil life faster than steady highway driving.
For the oil life system to work properly, it must be reset every time the engine oil is changed. If the system is not reset, the displayed oil life percentage will not accurately reflect the condition of the new oil, and future oil change reminders may appear too early or too late.
On some vehicles, when the system calculates that oil life has diminished, a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message appears to indicate that an oil change is necessary. Change the oil as soon as possible within the next 1 000 km (600 miles). Under ideal driving conditions, the oil life system might not indicate that an oil change is needed for more than a year. Even so, the engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year, and the system must be reset at that time.
For vehicles without the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message, an oil change is needed when the OIL LIFE REMAINING percentage is near 0 percent. Your dealer has trained service people who can perform this work using genuine parts and reset the system correctly. It is also important to check the oil level regularly and keep it within the proper range. Low oil level, dirty oil, or the wrong oil specification can reduce engine protection and may lead to unnecessary wear.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, the oil must be changed at 5 000 km (3,000 miles) since the last oil change. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever the oil is changed. This is a simple step, but it is important for accurate maintenance tracking on the Buick Enclave.
How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System
The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change the engine oil and filter based on how the vehicle is used. Whenever the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If the oil is changed before the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message appears, the system should still be reset so the oil life percentage begins again from 100 percent.
Before resetting the system, confirm that the oil and filter have actually been changed. Resetting the oil life display without changing the oil can lead to extended use of old oil and reduced engine protection.
If the vehicle does not have Driver Information Center (DIC) buttons:
1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine off. The vehicle must be in P (Park) to access this display.
Press the trip odometer reset stem until OIL LIFE REMAINING displays.
2. Press and hold the trip odometer reset stem until OIL LIFE REMAINING shows "100%". Three chimes sound and the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message goes off.
3. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message comes back on when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the procedure carefully, making sure the correct display is shown and the reset stem is held long enough for the confirmation to appear.
If the vehicle has Driver Information Center (DIC) buttons:
1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine off.
2. Press the vehicle information button until OIL LIFE REMAINING displays.
3. Press and hold the set/reset button until "100%" is displayed. Three chimes sound and the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message goes off.
4. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF.
If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message comes back on when the vehicle is started, the Engine Oil Life System has not reset. Repeat the procedure. After a correct reset, the system should display 100% oil life and begin calculating the next service interval based on actual vehicle operation.
Maintaining the oil level, using the correct oil specification, replacing the filter, and resetting the oil life monitor after service all work together to protect the engine. For the Buick Enclave, this routine service step is one of the most important ways to support long-term engine reliability.
