Buick Enclave: Hill Start Assist (HSA)
This vehicle has a Hill Start Assist (HSA) feature, which may be useful when the vehicle is stopped on a grade. HSA is designed to help prevent the vehicle from rolling forward or rearward during the first moment of drive-off. This can be helpful when starting from a stop on a hill, driveway, ramp, parking garage incline, or any sloped road surface.
After the driver completely stops and holds the vehicle in a full standstill on a grade, HSA will be automatically activated. During the short transition period between the moment the driver releases the brake pedal and begins pressing the accelerator, HSA holds brake pressure to help prevent rolling.
The brakes will automatically release when the accelerator pedal is applied within the two-second window. This brief hold gives the driver time to move smoothly from braking to accelerating without the vehicle drifting backward or forward unexpectedly.
HSA will not activate if the vehicle is in a drive gear and facing downhill, or if the vehicle is facing uphill and in R (Reverse). The system is designed to assist only in specific grade-start conditions where rollback prevention is appropriate.
In the Buick Enclave, Hill Start Assist is especially useful during everyday driving in hilly areas or when the vehicle is carrying passengers and cargo. However, the driver should still keep the brake pedal applied until ready to move and should not rely on the feature as a parking brake. HSA is a temporary starting aid, not a system for holding the vehicle in place for an extended period.
For the smoothest start on a hill, release the brake pedal only when ready to accelerate, then press the accelerator gently and steadily. Avoid sudden throttle input, especially on wet, snowy, icy, or loose surfaces where traction may be limited.
