Buick Enclave: Bluetooth

Buick Enclave 2008-2017 Owners Manual / Infotainment System / Phone / Bluetooth

For vehicles equipped with Bluetooth capability, the system can work with many compatible cell phones, allowing the driver to use supported phone functions through the Buick Enclave audio and voice control system.

Bluetooth capability may allow:

► Placing and receiving phone calls in hands-free mode.

► Sharing the cell phone’s address book or contact list with the vehicle, when supported by the phone.

To help minimize driver distraction, complete setup before driving and only while the vehicle is parked:

► Become familiar with the main features and controls of the cell phone.

Organize the phone book and contact lists clearly. Delete duplicate, outdated, or rarely used entries so voice commands and contact selection are easier to use.

If possible, program speed dial numbers or other shortcuts before driving.

► Review the controls and operation of the infotainment system.

► Pair the cell phone or phones to the Buick Enclave Bluetooth system.

The system may not work with every cell phone or support every phone feature. See “Pairing” in this section for more information.

► If the cell phone has voice dialing capability, learn how to use that feature to access the address book or contact list without handling the phone.

See “Voice Pass-Thru” in this section for more information.

► See “Storing and Deleting Phone Numbers” in this section for more information.

Buick Enclave warning icon for safe Bluetooth and cell phone use while drivingWARNING
When using a cell phone, looking too long or too often at the phone screen or infotainment/navigation display can distract the driver. Taking your eyes off the road too long or too often could cause a crash, resulting in serious injury or death.

Keep your attention focused on driving.

► The Bluetooth system can use a Bluetooth-capable cell phone with a Hands-Free Profile to make and receive phone calls. The system can be used when the key is in the ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY position. The Bluetooth operating range can be up to 9.1 m (30 ft), depending on the phone, signal conditions, and the vehicle environment.

Not all phones support all functions, and not all phones are compatible with the in-vehicle Bluetooth system.

See www.gm.com/bluetooth for more information on compatible phones.

Voice Recognition

The Bluetooth system uses voice recognition to interpret spoken commands for dialing phone numbers, using stored name tags, and navigating supported phone functions.

For additional assistance while in a voice recognition menu, say “Help.” The system will provide available command information for that menu.

Noise: Keep interior noise levels as low as possible. Open windows, high fan speed, loud passenger conversation, or road noise can make it harder for the system to recognize voice commands accurately.

When to Speak: A short tone sounds after the system responds. This tone indicates that the system is ready and waiting for a voice command. Wait for the tone, then speak.

How to Speak: Speak clearly in a calm, natural voice. Avoid speaking too quickly, shouting, or pausing too long between words.

Audio System

When the in-vehicle Bluetooth system is used, call audio plays through the front audio system speakers and temporarily overrides the current audio source. During a call, use the audio system volume knob to adjust the call volume.

The adjusted call volume is stored for later calls. To help prevent missed calls, the system uses a minimum volume level if the call volume has been turned down too low.

Bluetooth Controls

Use the steering wheel buttons to operate the in-vehicle Bluetooth system in the Buick Enclave.

See Steering Wheel Controls  for more information.

Buick Enclave push to talk button for answering calls and starting voice recognition (Push To Talk): Press this button to answer incoming calls, confirm system information, and start speech recognition.

Buick Enclave phone on hook button for ending or rejecting Bluetooth calls (Phone On Hook): Press this button to end a call, reject an incoming call, or cancel the current operation.

Pairing

► A Bluetooth-enabled cell phone must be paired with the Bluetooth system and then connected to the vehicle before it can be used through the hands-free system.

Before pairing the phone, review the cell phone manufacturer's user guide for Bluetooth setup instructions. If a Bluetooth phone is not connected, calls may be made using OnStar Hands-Free Calling, if equipped.

See OnStar Overview  for more information.

Pairing Information

► A Bluetooth phone with MP3 capability cannot be paired to the vehicle as both a phone and an MP3 player at the same time.

► Up to five cell phones can be paired to the Bluetooth system.

► The pairing process is disabled while the vehicle is moving.

► Pairing usually needs to be completed only once, unless the pairing information on the cell phone changes or the phone is deleted from the Buick Enclave Bluetooth system.

► Only one paired cell phone can be connected to the Bluetooth system at one time.

► If several paired cell phones are within range, the system connects to the first available phone in the order the phones were originally paired. To connect to a different paired phone, see “Connecting to a Different Phone” later in this section.

Pairing a Phone

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button used to begin phone pairing  for two seconds.
2. Say “Bluetooth.” This command can be skipped if the system proceeds directly to the Bluetooth menu.
3. Say “Pair.” The system responds with instructions and provides a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN is used in Step 5.
4. Start the pairing process on the cell phone that you want to pair.

For help with this process, see the cell phone manufacturer's user guide.

5. Locate the device named “Your Vehicle” in the list on the cell phone. Follow the instructions on the cell phone to enter the PIN provided in Step 3. After the PIN is entered successfully, the system prompts you to provide a name for the paired phone. This name is used to identify which phones are paired and connected to the vehicle. After pairing is complete, the system responds with “<phone name> has been successfully paired.”

6. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to pair additional phones.

Listing All Paired and Connected Phones

The Bluetooth system can list all cell phones that have been paired with it. If one of the paired phones is currently connected to the Buick Enclave, the system responds with “is connected” after that phone name. This helps identify which device is active before making calls or changing phone settings.

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for listing paired phones for two seconds.
2. Say “Bluetooth.”
3. Say “List.”

Deleting a Paired Phone

If the phone name you want to remove is unknown, use “Listing All Paired and Connected Phones” first to hear the stored phone names. 1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for deleting a paired phone for two seconds.
2. Say “Bluetooth.”
3. Say “Delete.” The system asks which phone should be deleted.
4. Say the name of the phone you want to delete from the Bluetooth system.

Connecting to a Different Phone

To connect to a different cell phone, the Bluetooth system searches for the next available paired phone in the order the phones were originally paired. Depending on which phone you want to connect, this command may need to be used more than once.

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for changing the connected phone for two seconds.
2. Say “Bluetooth.”
3. Say “Change phone.” If another paired cell phone is found, the system responds with “<Phone name> is now connected.” If another phone is not found, the original phone remains connected.

Storing and Deleting Phone Numbers

The system can store up to 30 phone numbers as name tags in the Hands-Free Directory. This directory is shared between the Bluetooth system and the OnStar system, if the Buick Enclave is equipped with OnStar.

The following commands are used to store and delete phone numbers.

Store: This command stores a complete phone number, or a group of numbers, as a name tag.

Digit Store: This command stores a phone number as a name tag by entering each digit one at a time. This can help when the system has difficulty recognizing a full number spoken all at once.

Delete: This command deletes individual name tags from the directory.

Delete All Name Tags: This command deletes all stored name tags in the Hands-Free Calling Directory and the OnStar Turn-by-Turn Destinations Directory, if equipped.

Using the “Store” Command

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for storing a phone number name tag for two seconds.
2. Say “Store.”
3. Say the phone number or group of numbers you want to store all at once, without pausing. Then follow the system prompts to save a name tag for that number.

Using the “Digit Store” Command

If the system recognizes an unwanted number, say “Clear” at any time to remove the last digit entered.

To hear all numbers the system has recognized, say “Verify” at any time.

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for digit store command for two seconds.
2. Say “Digit Store.”

3. Say each digit, one at a time, for the phone number you want to store. After each digit is entered, the system repeats the digit it heard and then plays a tone. After the final digit has been entered, say “Store,” and then follow the system directions to save a name tag for this number.

Using the “Delete” Command

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for deleting a stored name tag for two seconds.
2. Say “Delete.”
3. Say the name tag you want to delete.

Using the “Delete All Name Tags” Command

This command deletes all stored name tags in the Hands-Free Calling Directory and the OnStar Turn-by-Turn Destinations Directory, if equipped. Use this command carefully, because it removes all saved name tags rather than a single entry.

To delete all name tags:

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for deleting all stored name tags for two seconds.
2. Say “Delete all name tags.”

Listing Stored Numbers

The list command allows the system to read back all stored numbers and name tags. This is useful when checking which contacts have already been saved in the hands-free directory.

Using the “List” Command

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for listing stored numbers for two seconds.
2. Say “Directory.”
3. Say “Hands-Free Calling.”
4. Say “List.”

Making a Call

Calls can be made through the Bluetooth system using the following voice commands. The Buick Enclave hands-free system can dial a full number, call a stored name tag, dial digits one at a time, or redial the last number used on the connected phone.

Dial or Call: The Dial and Call commands can be used interchangeably to dial a phone number or call a stored name tag.

Digit Dial: This command allows a phone number to be dialed by speaking each digit one at a time.

Re-dial: This command dials the last number used on the connected cell phone.

Using the “Dial” or “Call” Command

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for using dial or call command for two seconds.
2. Say “Dial” or “Call.”
3. Say the entire phone number without pausing, or say the stored name tag.

Once the call is connected, the person being called is heard through the vehicle audio speakers.

Using the “Digit Dial” Command

The Digit Dial command allows a phone number to be dialed by entering the digits one at a time. This can improve recognition when dialing longer numbers or when the system does not clearly understand a full number spoken at once.

After each digit is entered, the system repeats the digit it heard and then plays a tone.

If the system recognizes an unwanted number, say “Clear” at any time to erase the last digit.

To hear all numbers recognized by the system, say “Verify” at any time.

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for digit dial command for two seconds.
2. Say “Digit Dial.”
3. Say each digit, one at a time, for the phone number you want to dial. After each digit is entered, the system repeats the digit it heard and then plays a tone. After the final digit has been entered, say “Dial.” Once connected, the person called is heard through the audio speakers.

Using the “Re-dial” Command

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for using the re-dial command for two seconds.

2. After the tone, say “Re-dial.” Once the call is connected, the person being called will be heard through the vehicle audio speakers.

Receiving a Call

When an incoming call is received through the Buick Enclave Bluetooth system, the audio system mutes automatically and a ring tone is heard inside the vehicle.

► Press Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for answering an incoming call to answer the call.
► Press Buick Enclave phone on hook button for ignoring an incoming call to ignore the call.

Call Waiting

Call waiting must be supported by the cell phone and enabled by the wireless service carrier before it can be used through the vehicle Bluetooth system.

► Press Buick Enclave phone on hook button for ending current call and switching calls to disconnect the current call and switch to the call that is on hold.

Three-Way Calling

Three-way calling must be supported by the cell phone and enabled by the wireless service carrier. If the service is not active on the phone account, the Bluetooth system cannot complete a three-way call.

1. While on a call, press Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for three way calling.
2. Say “Three-way call.”
3. Use the Dial or Call command to dial the number of the third party.
4. Once the second call is connected, press Bluetooth button for linking callers together in Buick Enclave to link all callers together.

Ending a Call

Press Buick Enclave phone on hook button for ending a Bluetooth call to end the current call.

Muting a Call

During a call, sounds from inside the vehicle can be muted so the person on the other end of the call cannot hear cabin conversation or background noise.

► To mute a call, press Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for muting a call by voice command, and then say “Mute call.” To cancel mute, press Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for cancelling call mute, and then say “Un-mute call.”

Transferring a Call

Audio can be transferred between the in-vehicle Bluetooth system and the connected cell phone. This is useful when a call needs to be continued privately on the phone or returned to the Buick Enclave speakers for hands-free use.

The cell phone must be paired and connected with the Bluetooth system before a call can be transferred. After the ignition is turned to ON/RUN, the connection process may take up to two minutes.

Transferring Audio from the Bluetooth System to a Cell Phone

During a call with the audio playing through the vehicle:

1. Press Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for transferring call audio to phone.
2. Say “Transfer Call.”

During a call with the audio on the cell phone, press Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for transferring phone audio to vehicle speakers. The audio transfers to the vehicle. If the audio does not transfer to the vehicle, use the audio transfer feature on the cell phone. See the cell phone manufacturer's user guide for more information.

Voice Pass-Thru

Voice pass-thru allows access to the voice recognition commands on the connected cell phone. This feature depends on the phone, so see the cell phone manufacturer's user guide to confirm whether the phone supports voice pass-thru.

To access contacts stored in the cell phone:

1. Press and hold Buick Enclave Bluetooth push to talk button for voice pass thru for two seconds.
2. Say “Bluetooth.” This command can be skipped if the system proceeds directly to the Bluetooth menu.
3. Say “Voice.” The system responds “OK, accessing <phone name>.”

The cell phone's normal voice prompt messages will then continue according to the phone's operating instructions.

Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) Tones

The Bluetooth system can send numbers and stored name tags during an active call. This feature can be used when calling a menu-driven phone system, such as voicemail, customer service, or an automated account service.

Account numbers and other frequently used number sequences can also be stored as name tags for easier use during calls.

Sending a Number or Name Tag During a Call

1. Press Buick Enclave Bluetooth button for sending numbers during a call. The system responds “Ready,” followed by a tone.
2. Say “Dial.”
3. Say the number or name tag to send.

Clearing the System

Unless information is deleted from the in-vehicle Bluetooth system, it will be retained indefinitely. This includes paired phone information and saved name tags in the phone book.

This also includes all saved name tags in the Hands-Free Calling Directory and phone pairing information. For instructions on removing this information from the Buick Enclave Bluetooth system, see the previous section “Deleting a Paired Phone” and the earlier sections about deleting name tags.
