Buick Enclave: Battery. All-Wheel Drive. Starter Switch Check
Battery
When a replacement battery is needed, refer to the replacement number shown on the original battery label. Using the correct battery size, rating, terminal layout, and specification is important for reliable starting, proper electrical system performance, and correct fitment in the battery tray.
The battery supplies power for starting the engine and supports many electrical functions when the engine is not running. In the Buick Enclave, a weak or incorrect battery can lead to slow cranking, warning messages, dim lighting, intermittent electrical issues, or difficulty starting in cold weather.
WARNING
Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
Battery terminals and related hardware should be handled carefully. Avoid touching your face while working around the battery, and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. If corrosion is present on the terminals, the battery cables and connections should be cleaned and inspected so electrical contact remains secure.
Vehicle Storage
WARNING
Batteries have acid that can burn you and gas that can explode.
You can be badly hurt if you are not careful. See Jump Starting for tips on working around a battery without getting hurt.
Vehicle batteries can release explosive gas, especially during charging or jump starting. Keep sparks, open flames, cigarettes, and metal tools away from the battery. Battery acid can also cause serious burns, so eye protection and careful handling are important whenever battery service is performed.
Infrequent Usage: Remove the black, negative (−) cable from the battery to help prevent the battery from running down during periods when the vehicle is not being driven regularly.
Extended Storage: Remove the black, negative (−) cable from the battery or use a battery trickle charger. A quality maintenance charger can help preserve the battery charge during long storage periods, especially if the vehicle sits for weeks or months.
Before storing the vehicle, make sure all interior lamps, accessories, and aftermarket devices are switched off. Electrical loads that remain active can slowly discharge the battery. If the Buick Enclave is placed into storage for an extended time, the battery condition should be checked before returning the vehicle to daily use.
All-Wheel Drive
It is not necessary to check the all-wheel drive lubricant levels as part of routine owner maintenance. The system is designed so that lubricant level inspection is normally only required when there is a sign of leakage, damage, or service-related concern.
► A fluid leak is the only normal reason for fluid loss. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to the dealer as soon as possible.
Possible signs of an all-wheel drive lubricant leak may include fluid spots under the vehicle, residue on drivetrain components, unusual odor, noise from the rear drive area, or vibration during driving. If any of these symptoms are noticed, the vehicle should be inspected before further damage develops.
The all-wheel drive system helps distribute power to improve traction when road conditions require it. For the Buick Enclave, keeping this system properly sealed and serviced is important for dependable operation in rain, snow, gravel, and other low-traction driving situations.
Starter Switch Check
WARNING
When you are doing this inspection, the vehicle could move suddenly. If the vehicle moves, you or others could be injured.
This check confirms that the engine starts only when the transmission is in the proper positions. It is an important safety-related inspection because the vehicle should not be able to start while a drive gear is selected.
1. Before starting this check, be sure there is enough room around the vehicle.
Choose a clear, level area with no people, walls, vehicles, or obstacles directly in front of or behind the vehicle.
2. Firmly apply both the parking brake and the regular brake.
See Parking Brake.
Do not use the accelerator pedal, and be ready to turn off the engine immediately if it starts.
3. Try to start the engine in each gear. The vehicle should start only in P (Park) or N (Neutral).
If the vehicle starts in any other position, contact your dealer for service. Starting in a drive position can create a serious safety risk and may indicate that the starter interlock or transmission range system needs inspection.
