Buick Enclave: Shifting out of Park. Parking over Things That Burn

Buick Enclave 2008-2017 Owners Manual / Driving and Operating / Starting and Operating / Shifting out of Park. Parking over Things That Burn

Shifting out of Park

The vehicle is equipped with an electronic shift lock release system. This system is designed to help prevent unintended shifting and to make sure the driver is applying the brake before moving the shift lever out of P (Park).

The shift lock release is designed to:

► Prevent ignition key removal unless the shift lever is in P (Park) with the shift lever button fully released, and prevent movement of the shift lever out of P (Park), unless the ignition is in ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY and the regular brake pedal is applied.

The shift lock release is always functional except in the case of an uncharged or low voltage battery, less than 9 volts. If the battery does not have enough voltage, the system may not have the electrical power needed to release the shift lock normally.

If the vehicle has an uncharged battery or a battery with low voltage, try charging or jump starting the battery. See Jump Starting  for more information.

To shift out of P (Park):

1. Apply the brake pedal.
2. Press the shift lever button.
3. Move the shift lever to the desired position.

If you still are unable to shift out of P (Park):

1. Fully release the shift lever button.
2. While holding down the brake pedal, press the shift lever button again.
3. Move the shift lever to the desired position.

If you still cannot move the shift lever from P (Park), see your dealer.

If the Buick Enclave does not shift out of Park normally, avoid using excessive force on the shift lever. Forcing the lever can damage the shift mechanism or related components. A low battery, improper brake pedal application, or a shift lock concern may be the cause, and the vehicle should be inspected if the condition continues.

Before attempting to shift out of Park, make sure the brake pedal is pressed firmly and the ignition is in the correct position. A smooth and deliberate shift action is better than repeated quick attempts, especially if the vehicle has been parked on a slope or if torque lock may be present.

Parking over Things That Burn

Warning icon about hot exhaust parts igniting dry leaves, paper, or grass under the vehicleWARNING
Things that can burn could touch hot exhaust parts under the vehicle and ignite. Do not park over papers, leaves, dry grass, or other things that can burn.

The exhaust system can remain very hot after driving. If the vehicle is parked over dry grass, leaves, paper, trash, or other flammable materials, those materials could contact hot exhaust parts and catch fire. This risk can be higher after highway driving, towing, climbing long grades, or operating the vehicle in hot weather.

Choose a safe parking surface whenever possible. Pavement, gravel, concrete, or a clean, clear area is safer than tall grass or dry vegetation. Before parking the Buick Enclave in a field, roadside area, campsite, or unpaved location, check that nothing flammable is directly under the vehicle.
