High Voltage Devices and Wiring

Exposure to high voltage can cause shock, burns, and even death. The high voltage components in the vehicle can only be serviced by technicians with special training.

High voltage components are identified by labels. Do not remove, open, take apart, or modify these components.

High voltage cable or wiring has orange covering. Do not probe, tamper with, cut, or modify high voltage cable or wiring.

High voltage components require special training, equipment, and safety procedures. Labels and orange-colored wiring are used to identify areas that must not be handled like ordinary wiring. Attempting to open, test, modify, or repair these parts without proper training can result in severe injury or death.

If high voltage wiring or components appear damaged after a collision, flood exposure, underbody impact, or improper repair, do not touch the affected area. The vehicle should be inspected by qualified service personnel before it is operated or serviced further.

Electrical System Overload

The vehicle has fuses and circuit breakers to protect against an electrical system overload. These protective devices are designed to help prevent wiring damage, component overheating, and possible fire caused by excessive current flow.

When the current electrical load is too heavy, the circuit breaker opens and closes, protecting the circuit until the current load returns to normal or the problem is fixed. This greatly reduces the chance of circuit overload and fire caused by electrical problems.

Fuses and circuit breakers protect power devices in the vehicle. Replace a bad fuse with a new one of the identical size and rating. Installing a fuse with a higher rating can allow too much current to flow through the circuit, which may damage wiring or connected components.

If there is a problem on the road and a fuse needs to be replaced, the same amperage fuse can be borrowed temporarily. Choose a feature of the vehicle that is not needed for immediate driving and replace the borrowed fuse as soon as possible.

In the Buick Enclave, electrical accessories and safety-related systems depend on proper circuit protection. If the same fuse fails again after replacement, the circuit should be inspected rather than repeatedly replacing fuses.

Headlamp Wiring

An electrical overload may cause the lamps to go on and off, or in some cases to remain off. Have the headlamp wiring checked right away if the lamps go on and off or remain off.

Headlamp problems can affect nighttime visibility and may also indicate a wiring, connector, fuse, relay, or lamp assembly concern. Flickering, intermittent operation, or repeated fuse failure should be diagnosed properly before the vehicle is driven in darkness.

Windshield Wipers

If the wiper motor overheats due to heavy snow or ice, the windshield wipers will stop until the motor cools and will then restart.

Although the circuit is protected from electrical overload, overload due to heavy snow or ice may cause wiper linkage damage. Always clear ice and heavy snow from the windshield before using the windshield wipers.

Trying to operate the wipers while they are frozen to the glass can damage the wiper blades, arms, linkage, or motor. Clear the glass first, free the blades gently, and use the defroster as needed before turning the wiper system on.

If the overload is caused by an electrical problem and not snow or ice, be sure to get it fixed.

Fuses and Circuit Breakers

The wiring circuits in your vehicle are protected from short circuits by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible thermal links. These protective devices are designed to interrupt electrical flow when a fault or overload is detected.

This greatly reduces the chance of fires caused by electrical problems. A fuse or circuit breaker should never be bypassed, modified, wrapped with metal, or replaced with an incorrect rating.

Look at the silver-colored band inside the fuse. If the band is broken or melted, replace the fuse. Be sure you replace a bad fuse with a new one of the identical size and rating.

Fuses of the same amperage can be temporarily borrowed from another fuse location if a fuse goes out. Replace the fuse as soon as you can.

Before replacing a fuse, turn off the affected component and the ignition when possible. If the new fuse opens again, there is likely an underlying electrical problem that needs diagnosis. For the Buick Enclave, correct fuse ratings and proper circuit protection are essential for dependable electrical operation and vehicle safety.
